'Freebird' ultimately unforgettable entertainment
Link #146500 submitted by j d ess on Jul 4, 2009 01:39pm.   (+300XP)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/music/chi-0705-freebird...
Thirty-five years ago, Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd released the single "Freebird," and in the decades since it has been an anthem, a demand, an ode to personal independence, the lamest heckle in the history of rock. But what it has never been is forgettable -- not to the band who played it, not to the disparate acts who still get a rowdy "Freebird!" shouted at them, regardless of what they play or who they are.

"The best thing about touring Europe is no one yells 'Freebird,' " said James McNew, bass player for the indie band Yo La Tengo.

MOUNTAIN OF DEBT: Rising debt may be next crisis government
Link #146499 submitted by Mac on Jul 4, 2009 01:23pm.   (+150XP)
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20090704/D997DOMG0.html
The Founding Fathers left one legacy not celebrated on Independence Day but which affects us all. It's the national debt.

The country first got into debt to help pay for the Revolutionary War. Growing ever since, the debt stands today at a staggering $11.4 trillion - equivalent to about $37,000 for each and every American. And it's expanding by over $1 trillion a year.

The mountain of debt easily could become the next full-fledged economic crisis without firm action from Washington, economists of all stripes warn.

M-80s: The Big, Illicit Bang fun & games
Link #146498 submitted by Mac on Jul 4, 2009 09:39am.   (+240XP)
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204058504574264092709...
Every summer, folks flock to the Fireworks Factory Outlet in Cody, Wyo., and cram their arms full of sparklers and bottle rockets and Roman candles. But at the checkout counter they reveal their true hearts’ desire.

“Do you have any M-80s?” they’ll ask.

Bill Smith, the owner, can only shake his head.

The famously potent M-80 has been banned for amateur use since 1966, classified by the federal government as a dangerous explosive. Every year, the Consumer Product Safety Commission stages a gruesome public demonstration in which M-80s and other fireworks obliterate melons and blow the heads off mannequins.

That has hardly diminished their appeal.

How Fructose Impairs the Memory health
Link #146496 submitted by Mac on Jul 4, 2009 09:04am.   (+340XP)
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=forget-the-fructose
Americans consume more fructose than ever before, yet concerns remain that the sugar, used to sweeten beverages and processed foods, poses health risks. In animals, fructose-rich diets increase the production of fat and promote resistance to the energy-regulating hormone insulin. New research suggests that memory suffers as well, at least in rats.

Defying the United States on Independence Day, North Korea fired seven missiles on Saturday into the sea off its east coast.

Military officials told South Korea's Yonhap news agency that they appeared to be Scud-type missiles and described them as more dangerous than the short-range weapons fired Thursday.

Self-help 'makes you feel worse' health
Link #146494 submitted by DodgyKnees the Cynic on Jul 4, 2009 04:10am.   (+240XP)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8132857.stm
Canadian researchers found those with low self-esteem actually felt worse after repeating positive statements about themselves.

They said phrases such as "I am a lovable person" only helped people with high self-esteem.

The study appears in the journal Psychological Science.

A UK psychologist said people based their feelings about themselves on real evidence from their lives.

Well, d'uh!

Blind man sees after having a TOOTH implanted into his eye health
Link #146493 submitted by FoolProof on Jul 3, 2009 07:38pm.   (+540XP)
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1197256/Blind-man-sees-wife...
When Martin Jones met his wife four years ago, he never imagined that one day he would get to see what she looked like.

The 42-year-old builder was left blind after an accident at work more than a decade ago.

But a remarkable operation - which implants part of his tooth in his eye - has now pierced his world of darkness.

The procedure, performed fewer than 50 times before in Britain, uses the segment of tooth as a holder for a new lens grafted from his skin.

12 Ways to Fail Your Job Interview work sucks
Link #146490 submitted by Mac on Jul 3, 2009 06:37pm.   (+250XP)
http://www.fiscalgeek.com/2009/06/fail-job-interview
During my time in management I have had the opportunity to hire many people which means I’ve interviewed over 50 people both for my positions and for fellow managers. It was one of my favorite parts of the job getting to meet new people, learn their motivations and in many cases learn what not to do. I guess you could call this of a collection of non job interview tips. Frankly it’s much easier to identify those things that are going to keep you from your dream job. For background my current company follows a rigorous interview process that involves no less than 5 different interviewers over the course of the day including a high level manager we call the As Appropriate.

So without further adieu 12 sure fire ways to fail your job interview.

Palin resigning as Alaska governor on July 26 government
Link #146487 submitted by johnny2000 on Jul 3, 2009 05:19pm.   (+280XP)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_palin_resigning
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made a surprise announcement Friday that she is resigning from office at the end of the month without explaining why she plans to step down, raising speculation that she would focus on a run for the White House in the 2012 race.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate hastily called a news conference Friday morning at her home in suburban Wasilla, giving such short notice that only a few reporters actually made it to the announcement. State troopers blocked late-arriving media outside her home, and her spokesman, Dave Murrow, finally emerged to confirm that Palin will step down July 26. He refused to give details about the governor's future plans.

New Evidence on the Foreclosure Crisis government
Link #146486 submitted by Mac on Jul 3, 2009 05:01pm.   (+200XP)
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124657539489189043.html
What is really behind the mushrooming rate of mortgage foreclosures since 2007? The evidence from a huge national database containing millions of individual loans strongly suggests that the single most important factor is whether the homeowner has negative equity in a house -- that is, the balance of the mortgage is greater than the value of the house.

This means that most government policies being discussed to remedy woes in the housing market are misdirected.
